Description

Fiona Vande Velde PhD project PARACOM

Helminth-infections (mostly caused by gastrointestinal nematode parasites) have a negative impact on production and animal welfare of grazing cattle. Worldwide, farmers and veterinarians rely strongly on the use of broad-spectrum anthelmintics to prevent infections with gastrointestinal nematodes. However excessive use results in nematodes becoming resistant to these drugs. The use of diagnostic techniques and a more targeted antiparasitic drug applications are considered as a more sustainable way to improve animal health and production while maintaining anthelmintic drug efficacy. The aim of this research is to extract the motives for excessive use of anthelmintics, predict this present behavior and anticipate with effective communication strategies. These communication strategies should help veterinaries and farmers change their behaviors into more responsible and sustainable use of antiparasitic drugs in their cattle.
